How to Advertise on Facebook Amidst Its Crackdown

Are you advertising on Facebook? Advertising on Facebook is a great way to build brand awareness and reach new customers in your area. As a business owner it is easy to get caught up in the business and forget about advertising. The reality is social media, particularly Facebook, with a population larger than China, is a force dominating our lives. Facebook is an easy, cost-efficient way to reach your target customers. As such, Facebook has recently decided to crack down on advertisers that provide a poor user experience.

What does the crackdown mean?

Facebook is reducing distribution and/or disapproving ads that do not meet its new low quality or disruptive content policy. This is defined as:

  • Ads where the images are excessively cropped – requiring people to click to see the full image
  • Deceptive or exaggerated ad copy that incentivizes people to click on your ad
  • Sexually suggestive or shocking content on your landing page
  • Malicious or deceptive ads on your landing page
  • A high ratio of ads relative to content on your landing page
  • Pop-up ads or other ad formats that disrupt the user experience on your landing page

The below examples are sensationalized posts using clickbait:

How to advertise successfully on Facebook:

If you are advertising on Facebook, think about the user experience. If it’s not something you would enjoy or want to experience your customer won’t want too either. For reference here are a few simple rules to follow:

  • Use quality images and videos – this is a great place to use your before and after photos
  • Keep it simple – provide a short, relevant headline and description
  • Don’t withhold information or force people to engage (like, share, or comment)
  • Follow our code of CARE
