Industry News: Google My Business Suspension Issues

Your Google My Business (GMB) page is the gateway to your local website. We like to think of it as the “curb appeal” to your house (local website). GMB listings allow users to call without ever visiting the website. We cannot stress how important it is to make sure your GMB listing is updated and accurate. If you need help assessing your page, please reach out to our Scorpion representatives for assistance. 

In recent months, Google has begun taking more swift and decisive action against GMB listings that violate their terms and guidelines. This has resulted in several listings being suspended and removed from Google maps. 

Google, at this point, has not provided much insight or notifications about issues that are found. Our teams are doing everything we can to address issues if they occur. Our goal is to work with you and make any necessary updates as quickly as possible. Following the GMB guidelines is important in order to protect your business and the brand.

One of the key items is having a legitimate business address located inside your owned territory. Most issues we’ve seen come from virtual offices, such as P.O. boxes or addresses outside of owned territories.

If you are experiencing a suspension issue, here are recommended items to have on hand to help you reinstate your listing:

  • A copy of your business license (If you do not have a business license, other documentation that proves to Google you are a legitimate business and displays your business name should be sufficient.)
  • A home address that can be hidden from Google, but that we can send a Google postcard to verify the listing if re-verification is ever needed.
  • An accurate listing of the area(s) you serve by zip code.
